My name is Andy Stewart and I am the AmeriCorps intern for Leadership Oklahoma this year. My job consists of lots of paperwork, getting coffee, and helping with whatever needs to be done around the office. Typical intern stuff, ya know? But my job also comes with a huge perk. I get to be a chaperone for YLOK Class XIV, which I am stoked to do. Before we go much further, I feel that I must tell a little bit about myself.
| That's me on the left! |
My name is Andy Stewart. (I already said that, but I feel the need to say it again since I'm telling you about me.) I just finished my sophomore year at the incredible University of Oklahoma. I am majoring in Letters with minor in Constitutional Studies. Ice cream is my favorite food and The Office is my favorite show. I'm a pretty average college, learning how to grow up and all. When I grow up, I want to change the world. Or maybe just change people's lives (I guess both could work. I'm not too worried about the details.) Really, though, I want to create change as I'm growing up, because I don't know if I'll ever truly get to the point of being "grown up." My favorite thing to do is adventure. Bob Goff, the author of Love Does, says "Being engaged is a way of doing life, a way of living and loving. It's about going to extremes and expressing the bright hope that life offers us...that's what I want my life to be about." I could not agree more with his idea.
YLOK is one of those adventures that I cannot wait to relive. I was lucky enough to selected for the program as a part of Class XI. As tradition, we traveled all over Oklahoma, visiting every corner of the state, meeting business and community leaders, and learning how to become better leaders ourselves. Besides being full of hurry, to-be friends, and yet-to-be-had experiences, YLOK is the embodiment of one particular idea I love: potential. To have been selected for YLOK, you must have shown a tremendous amount of potential. The places we visit have capitalized on potential, making them worthy of a stop on our fully packed trip. Potential can be found in almost every element of YLOK. For this reason, I desperately wanted to come back. And LeeAnne, graciously, allowed me the opportunity to work for them and invest the students who are coming through, just as someone once invested in me. I believe YLOK has the potential to change people, because personal change is something I experienced during the trip.
Alright, so now that I'm feeling all nostalgic, I must say I am incredibly excited to meet all of the you on Sunday. This is Oklahoma's chance to showoff and my-oh-my does she not disappoint. So make a packing list. Check it twice. Because even though Santa may not be coming to town, YLOK is. And it is going to amazing.
See you soon,
Andy Stewart
